Dr. Kanury Rao is an Indian scientist and immunologist. He was born on 27 September 1958 in India. He was always interested in the field of Science since childhood. He was known as a good scholar and had brilliant knowledge of biology since childhood. He was a member of the Science and Engineering Research Board of the Department of Science and Technology. Dr Rao has also worked as the president of the Indian Immunology Society from 2004 to 2008.
Dr. Kanury Rao graduated from Pune University, Department of Chemistry, Pune, India, and did his MSc in 1979 from MS University, Department of Chemistry, India, Ph.D., 1983.
He started his career in History In 1995 as a Group Leader of the Immunology Group, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), New Delhi, India. From 1991-to 1994, he started working as an Assistant Scientist, ICGEB New Delhi. From 1988-to 1991, he worked as Research Scientist, ICGEB New Delhi. Dr. Kanury Rao has also worked as the Drug Discovery Research Centre (DDRC) head at the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) Faridabad.
Kanury Rao has dedicated his life to the field of Science. He has done many kinds of research for the better of humankind. He has recently developed a novel technology for early cancer detection in women with his fellow team. With his new research, many institutions expect to reduce the number of patients with cancer and increase the life expectancy of people who die due to cancer. He led a group that discovered a novel subset of IgD receptors on ‘naive’ B lymphocytes, which helped in a wider understanding of antigen-specific B cell selection and amplification. He has worked on designing new synthetic peptide vaccines for Hepatitis B, which were reported to generate high immunogenicity in humans. People also know him for his studies in peptide synthesis and cell signaling and the design of synthetic peptide vaccines.
Dr Rao has worked hard to become an immunologist and has done much notable work to achieve big goals in his life. In 1993 Dr. Kanury Venkata Subba Rao won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize by The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1997, and he received the National Bioscience Award for Career Development in 1999. In 2000, The Indian National Science Academy elected him as a fellow; the same year, Rao achieved the Millennium Plaque of Honour of the Indian Science Congress. He was also a recipient of the Ranbaxy Research Award in 2001.
