New information has emerged regarding the presence of water on the moon. Scientists say that there may be more water on the lunar surface than earlier estimates. There is evidence of its cold corners and water deposited in the rocks. Scientists say that abundant water on the moon may prove to be important for astronauts in the future.

Can be used for drinking

According to scientists, this water can be used for drinking. It is also possible to use it as fuel. The team at the US Space Agency NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center has detected water as a molecule on the lunar surface. Earlier studies were skeptical about water and hydroxyl molecules. This skepticism has been overcome in new studies.

Exists in the form of a molecule

Casey Honibal, who is leading the team, said that the water we have detected is not in the form of ice, but water molecules. These molecules are so far away from each other that they cannot get into ice or liquid state. Another study published in the science journal Nature Astronomy places the cold moon at the center. The temperature on this part remains below minus 163 degrees Celsius.

20 percent more than earlier estimates

Scientists say that water at this temperature can remain stored for billions of years. Paul Hein of the University of Colorado said that there is a possibility of water in the form of snow on an area of more than 40 thousand square kilometers on the moon. This is 20 percent more than the earlier estimate. The source of water on the moon still remains a mystery. Heine said, ‘Where did the water on the moon come from, is a big question.’

Sophia finds out

Paul Hein said that we are trying to find a solution through various research. With this solution, questions related to the abundance of water on the earth will also be solved. According to the news agency IANS, this water has been discovered by NASA’s Stratosphere Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (Sophia). Sofia is a joint project of NASA and the German Aerospace Center.
