Trees at Amazon Rainforest Are being Cut Down At A Fast Pace , Deforestation at Highest Level in Last 11 Years
Brasilia, ANI. Deforestation in the Amazon Forest of Brazil has reached its highest level in the last 11 years. This has been revealed after figures released on Monday by the Brazilian government. According to a report by CNN, these figures were obtained from the Satellite Legal Amazon Deformation Monitoring Project (PRODES). It includes data on deforestation rates in 9 states.
Brazil is currently being led by President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro, elected in October 2018, has been heavily criticized for not defending the Amazon Forest. The President turned down an offer of $ 20 million in aid during the G7 summit in France to protect the Amazon forest.
CNN stated in this report that the reason for the rapid deforestation is Bolsanaro’s strategy implemented to eliminate the Ministry of the Environment. Brazilian Environment Minister Ricardo Sales said that the level of deforestation is very high.
In August this year, US President Donald Trump offered assistance to deal with the wildfires that surrounded the Amazon forest. French President Emanuel Macron called the fire in the Amazon forests an international crisis.
He had said that it should be on the agenda at the G7 summit in Biarritz. PM Modi also attended this conference. Bolsonaro turned down Macron’s offer. Bolsonaro accused Macron of using fire in the Amazon jungles for political gain.
