Corona in Mink: From field beaver to wild beaver, then infection to other wild animals … Once the corona virus makes its way into nature, it will become a recurring epidemic.
In early November, Denmark ordered all its mink to be killed. About 1.7 crore otters breed in the fur farms of the country were killed. This is because the Covid-19 virus was found in some beaver. This was followed by mutation of the corona virus. Danish authorities feared that if the mutated virus began to spread to humans, it could defy vaccine. Beaver or Mink is a kind of carnivorous creature that is breed for its fur. Denmark is its largest producer and there are the highest number of covid cases among the beaver.
That form of the virus did not end with the killing of Denmark’s otters. The Netherlands also expanded in April, Denmark in June, then Spain, Italy, Lithuania, Sweden, Greece, Canada and the US. Corona virus has been found in at least nine countries in farmed beaver. This first case in the US came in October. The fear of the virus spreading into the forest also proved to be true. On December 13, a Covid-infected wild beaver was found in Ota, USA. How much the virus has spread in the forest is not known yet. But if it spreads further, trouble is sure to come. Each time we control the pandemic with vaccines and lockdowns, it will spread through the forest again. That is, cases of infection will start appearing in humans repeatedly.
The more times a virus is exchanged between humans and otters, the greater the likelihood of a dangerous mutation. A change seen in the new ‘UK strain’ was already seen in the virus variant found in Beaver. The possibility of such infection is high because the otter is at greater risk of infection in the respiratory system. If a farm worker is Covid and coughs or sneezes near the fence, it does not take time for the virus to spread throughout the farm’s beaver.
The mutation of the virus continues all the time. According to the BBC, changes in the virus within the otter did not reach humans. But a set of changes called ‘Cluster 5’ spread to 12 people in Denmark. In addition, 200 other people also found slightly altered forms of beaver virus. Cluster 5 has become a cause for concern as it changes the spike protein that the vaccine uses to train the body to fight against the cavid. Tests showed that the antibodies of Cluster 5 to patients gave a light response.
Britain has become isolated in a way after the introduction of new strains. However, an analysis of the Washington Post states that the UK responsibly tackled the new strain. The new strain was quickly identified there because it has the world’s best and most comprehensive genetic sequencing program. By the latest update, the UK had done a genetic analysis of 1,36,835 virus samples, which is almost half of all the samples sequenced worldwide.
