More than 90 percent of the children in the age group of four to eight years take admission in an educational institution, but the number of girls in government school is more than boys. This information is given in the 14th Annual Report (ASER) on the level of education released on Tuesday.

The ASER report for the year 2019 is based on a survey conducted in 26 districts across 24 states. The survey included 36 thousand children in the age group of four to eight years. According to the report, “more than 90 percent of children in the age group of four to eight years take admission in some kind of educational institution. This percentage increases with age in the districts selected for the survey.

At the age of four, 91.3 percent of the children took admission, but among the children aged eight, this percentage was 99.5 percent. However, there is a significant difference in children of same age as to where they entered. For example, 70 percent of five-year-old children are in anganwadi or pre-primary class, but 21.6 percent have already enrolled in class one. 32.8 percent of six-year-olds are in anganwadi or pre-primary classes, while 46.4 percent are in class one and 18.7 percent are in class or higher classes.

According to the report, “gender inequality can be clearly seen even among young children as the number of girls is more than boys in government schools and the number of boys is more than girls in private institutions”. The report says that among the children in the age group of four to five years, 56.8 percent girls and 50.4 percent boys are admitted to government schools. While 43.2 percent girls and 49.6 percent boys are admitted to private schools. Among children in the age group of six to eight years, 61.1 percent girls and 52.1 percent boys are admitted in government schools.
