The impact of Tau Te Hurricane has started showing in Mumbai. Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, has been raining with the winds since the early morning of 17 May. High waves are rising in the sea around the ‘Gate Way of India’ of the city. The Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai. It is estimated that on May 17, there may be heavy rains with strong winds at some places in the city.
The ‘very severe’ Tau Te storm is expected to pass from the Mumbai coast towards Gujarat. Because of this, three NDRF teams have been deployed in the western suburbs of the city. According to news agency PTI, Navy teams have also been placed on standby.
The Meteorological Department has said that the speed of winds can reach 75-85kmph in many districts of Maharashtra. Heavy rains are expected in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Ratnagiri in the next few hours.
Tau Te reached Maharashtra on 16 May
Tau Te reached the coast of Maharashtra on Sunday 16 May, uprooting several trees and electric poles and causing other minor damage, but no casualties were reported.
Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray held several meetings with top officials to monitor the situation and also informed the Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the preparations of the state. Thackeray told Shah, “All the districts in the entire coastal region have been put on high alert.”
As a precautionary measure, the Indian Coast Guard ensured the safe return of about 5,600 boats that went fishing in the Arabian Sea.
Teams of NDRF, SDRF, Maharashtra Police, Fire Brigade, Coast Guard, Indian Navy and other agencies are on high alert in the entire coastal region to deal with any incident.
