Sumit Nagal wins ATP Challenger in Argentina, created many records

India’s rising tennis player Sumit Nagal has won the Buenos Aires ATP Challenger clay event. This is the first ATP Challenger title of any Indian in this season.

India’s rising tennis player Sumit Nagal has won the Buenos Aires ATP Challenger clay event title. This is the first ATP Challenger title by an Indian this season. While this is the second Challenger title of 22-year-old Nagal’s career. He first captured the Bangalore Challenger event in 2017.

World No. 161 Sumit Nagal defeated World No.166 Fecundo Baganis of Argentina 6-4, 6-2 in the final of the Buenos Aires ATP Challenger tournament in Argentina. In the semi-finals, he defeated Brazilian world number-108 Thiago Monteiro 6–0, 6–1. With this title, Sumit Nagal has moved towards a big jump in the ranking. They can gain 80 ranking points.

Naval Buenos Aires is the first Asian to win the ATP Challenger title. Pablo Cuevas, Kyle Edmund, and Pablo Andujar are the only non-Argentine players to have won this competition. Naval was seeded 7th in the competition, while Argentina’s Facundo Baganis was seeded 8th. Nadal also became the first Indian to win a clay title on South American soil.

After this title victory, Sumit Nagal said, ‘It was quite spectacular. I came here alone. I did not have my coach (Sasa Nansel) and trainer (Milos Gagelik) with me. It is difficult to play without a coach. But now it is really fantastic for me to lift the trophy here and I am proud of myself.

He said, ‘Today I have won the title here and now I have to go to Brazil next week. Where to play another Challenger tournament. Therefore, I do not have time to celebrate this victory. I still need to work hard so that I can improve my performance further.

Sumit Nagal lost to Roger Federer 6-4, 1-6, 2-6, 4-6 at the US Open this year. Sumit Nagal, who won the Wimbledon (Junior) Boys’ doubles champion in 2015, became the first Indian player to win the first set against 20-time Grand Slam winner Federer.
