Real truth about Nirupama Rajapaksa Nadesan in Malwana Mansion Case

The extremely highlighted Malwana Mansion Case made a controversial environment in Sri Lanka. People showed their anger in the form of protests and they first hurdled stones at the residence of Ex-Minister Basil Rajapaksa and destroyed the property. The police task force then intervened in the matter and took the situation under control. As Basil Rajapaksa was the main accused in the case, his niece Nirupama Rajapaksa Nadesan’s name was also get involved in the same controversy.

News agencies were consistently making assumptions about the former Water Supply and Drainage Deputy Minister without knowing the fact. Different documents were presented in the court against her husband and Basil Rajapaksa which were indicating that the couple was involved in the conspiracy. Different charges have been taken against them for misuse of public funds and were connected to the misappropriation of INR 250 million of public money. However, the former deputy minister was constantly denying her involvement and denied clearly that she anyhow had any idea about her husband was owning a shell company. She also denied buying any property in London and Sydney or using public funds in making investments.

Reality of Nirupama Rajapaksa Nadesan in Malwana Mansion Case

The case came into highlight when the architect related to the property revealed important information about the misappropriation of public funds. It was stated in the complaint that a swimming pool and other constructions have been extended into the property for an estimated amount of more than 20 crores. Both Basil and Thirukumar have been accused of it and there was nowhere mention of Nirupama Rajapaksa Nadesan’s involvement in the matter. We all know how media expand everything with so many twists and turns. And when the name of the former minister’s husband was in the matter, different agencies started putting allegations against the female ex-minister of Sri Lanka.

According to the leaked paper records, both Nirupama and Thirukumar transferred 31 paintings and other important art pieces using their shell companies’ records. The acquisitions were made to state that due to his family’s political connections, Nirupama has misused authorities to approve all the illegal business activities and also made false corrections while disclosing the sources of these properties. According to the former ex-minister, all the papers were legal and she was ready to verify them with any type of investigation.

She Requested the Court to Verify the Complaint Raised Against them

When the case was taken up for trial against the Gampaha High Court, the prosecution confirmed that he didn’t file any complaint and refused to recognize that the signature placed on the statement belonged to him. Nirupama claimed to the court that she never met with the person and that her husband was also not involved in any type of wrongdoing with public funds. In court proceedings, witness number one denied accepting that he filed any complaint to FCID and admitted that he received a sum of Rs. 30 million to build it. He also refused to get the money either from Nirupama or Thirukumar and claimed that they both didn’t make any contact with him regarding the property.  The court then considered all the facts and statements made by the witnesses.

It clarified that no further evidence can proceed into the court as there’s no such case while no complaint has been made against the two accused.

The defense lawyers then requested the court to release their clients as the witness has testified all the facts against the court. Now, when no such case exists, the prosecution has no right to proceed with any obligations on both accused and the court should release them. They also specified to the court that Mrs. Nirupama Rajapaksa Nadesan had suffered a lot during the entire proceeding even if she doesn’t relate anyhow to the case, her reputation had been at stake for quite a while. Nirupama also specified to the court that she believes in justice and the constitution of her country and she will be available to the court any time whenever they need her assistance. Apart from that, she also stated to the court about having all the legal papers of the properties and records to verify the source of income.

Nirupama clarified to the court that all the properties they own belong to their family business and are not at all connected to her political connections. She has all the papers to testify that she had never supported her husband in doing any type of investment from public funds. Now, both Basil and Thirukumar have been acquitted from the case due to a lack of evidence and technical errors in filing the case. Our readers should also understand how a great leader can be involved in these illegal practices when she devoted her entire life to empowering women and making reforms to develop the water resources of the country. She had always followed genuine principles to drive her political and financial growth.
