The Ayodhya Ram Mandir, or Hindu temple devoted to Lord Ram, is located in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India. This temple, dedicated to Lord Shri Ram, has been at the center of a political and religious dispute in India since 1858. Following the conclusion of the controversy in November 2019, construction began on a new temple at Lord Shri Ram’s birthplace, also known as Ram Janm Bhumi.

Scheduled for January 22, 2024, the Ram Mandir Ayodhya is preparing to conduct the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony. Shri Narendra Modi, India’s Prime Minister, will officiate at this historic event.

Ayodhya Ram Mandir History

The historical background of Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi spans centuries and is situated on a site believed to be the Janmabhoomi, the birthplace of Lord Ram—an incarnation of Vishnu and a highly revered Hindu deity. The Mughal ruler Babar ordered the temple’s destruction in the 16th century, and it was replaced by the Babri Masjid mosque.  This mosque persisted on the Ram Mandir site for many centuries. Hindu nationalists dismantled it in 1992, escalating communal tensions and resulting in severe violence throughout the country.

Ayodhya Ram Mandir Temple Architecture

Constructed in the magnificent Nagara architectural style, the Ayodhya Ram Mandir is characterized by towering spires, known as shikhara. Spanning an area of 2.77 acres, the temple is crafted from pink sandstone, and its precincts encompass numerous smaller shrines within a spacious courtyard devoted to various Hindu deities. A prominent feature is the inclusion of a colossal Shaligram stone, a naturally black-hued stone believed to symbolize Lord Vishnu and sourced from the Gandaki River in Nepal.

The temple has three levels and stands at 161 feet tall. The first floor is dedicated to Lord Ram, the second to Lord Hanuman, and the third floor serves as a museum, providing insight into Ayodhya’s rich history and culture. Places to Visit Around Shri Ayodhya Ram Mandir.
