Ollie Pope’s 147-Year First in Test Cricket Leaves Stokes and Root Elated

Read Time:2 Minute, 23 Second

In a remarkable achievement in Test cricket history, Ollie Pope has set a new record that has stood for 147 years. His extraordinary performance in the third Test against Sri Lanka at The Oval has not only marked a significant personal milestone but also elicited joyous reactions from his England teammates, including senior players Ben Stokes and Joe Root.

Pope’s century, which came off a stylish square drive, was celebrated with great enthusiasm by his teammates. As the ball crossed the boundary, Pope clenched his fists in triumph, while Root, Stokes, and the rest of the England dressing room stood to acknowledge his achievement. This century was especially meaningful for Pope and England, given the recent doubts surrounding his future in the team. After a series of disappointing scores—6, 6, 1, and 17—there had been suggestions to reconsider his role, particularly as Stokes’ successor. However, Pope’s record-breaking innings of 103 not out, scored off just 103 balls, firmly silenced his critics.

In reaching this milestone, Pope became the first cricketer in 147 years to score each of his first seven centuries against different opponents. His centuries have come against South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Ireland, India, West Indies, and now Sri Lanka. This unique achievement underscores his versatility and consistency as a batsman.

Pope’s innings was a crucial part of England’s dominant performance on Day 1 of the Test match. Despite interruptions due to weather, England finished the day at 221 for 3. Ben Duckett played an aggressive innings of 86, narrowly missing out on a century, while Pope’s unbeaten knock was a key highlight. England is aiming for a clean sweep in their home Test series this summer, having already secured a 3-0 victory over the West Indies.

Duckett’s innings was characterized by bold and entertaining shots, although he fell just short of his fourth Test century. Alongside Pope, Harry Brook remained not out with 8 runs, having hit 13 fours and two sixes. The day’s play was disrupted by a three-hour stoppage due to bad light and rain, which hindered Sri Lanka’s efforts. They managed to take only three wickets, with Joe Root dismissed for a modest 13 and Dan Lawrence struggling once again, making only 5 runs.

In a notable development, England introduced Josh Hull, a 20-year-old left-arm seamer, into the squad despite his limited first-class experience. Coach Brendon McCullum described Hull’s inclusion as a “hunch” and a “punt,” aimed at preparing for future series, including the Ashes next year.

Overall, Ollie Pope’s century and England’s strong position in the match reflect a period of rejuvenation and hope for the team. Pope’s record-breaking feat and the team’s performance set the stage for a promising conclusion to the series against Sri Lanka.
