MJ Akbar-Priya Ramani defamation case decided today

A Delhi court on Wednesday, former Union Minister M.J. The decision in the criminal defamation case can be heard against Akbar’s female journalist Priya Ramani.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey will pronounce this decision in an open court in the presence of both parties.

After hearing the arguments of both sides on 10 February, the court adjourned the decision till 17 February “MJ Akbar“.

Ramani’s lawyer Rebecca John had demanded from the court that her client be acquitted in the case. At the same time, Akbar’s lawyer Geeta Luthra asserted that due to Ramani’s allegations, Akbar’s image has deteriorated.

Debate on Ramani’s Twitter account too

Senior advocate Rebecca told the court that Ramani’s Twitter account had been deactivated and could be activated following the court’s instruction

Rebecca John also questioned that the complainant had not filed any application to restart her client’s Twitter account.

At the same time, senior lawyer Luthra had said that if Ramani had given a ‘defamatory statement’ after many years, it was his responsibility to prove the truth.

During the cross-examination, MJ Akbar questioned journalist Priya Ramani while destroying evidence by deleting his Twitter account in a defamation case which is a criminal act.

What was the matter

Priya Ramani had accused the then Minister of State of External Affairs, MJ Akbar of sexual misconduct, during the Me To campaign and she was the first woman to make such accusations.

As part of the #MeToo campaign, 20 women journalists accused Akbar of sexual harassment. These women alleged that while being editor of The Asian Age and other newspapers, Akbar sexually harassed them.

He resigned from the Union Cabinet on October 17, 2018, following these allegations against MJ Akbar.

Senior journalist Priya Ramani, who first accused Akbar, expressed happiness over his resignation.

Priya Ramani had tweeted, “Our allegations have been proved correct by Akbar’s resignation. We are now waiting for the day when we will get justice in the court.”

First, MJ Akbar‘s name was taken by Priya Ramani. He shared his firsthand experience of harassment at the office by retweeting an article he wrote for Vogue India magazine titled ‘To the Harvey Weinstein of the World’.

He alleged that Akbar had made obscene acts with her inside and outside the newsroom.

In the statement issued after the resignation, Akbar said that he would personally fight against the allegations. Simultaneously, Akbar filed a defamation case against Ramani.
