Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan feels that Jasprit Bumrah needs to take extra risks besides being more aggressive to make his presence in the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. He did not get any wickets in the recent ODI series. Bumrah, who was away from cricket for four months due to stress fractures last year, played all three ODIs against New Zealand, giving 167 runs in 30 overs, but could not get any wickets.

Zaheer said that the opposing batsmen will now have to be more cautious in playing against Bumrah, while this fast bowler will have to make extra efforts to return to form. Zaheer told ‘Cricbuzz.com’, ‘When you gain such fame as Jaspreet Bumrah has achieved in so many years, then you have to fight with it’.

Zaheer said, ‘Bumrah has to understand that he has to be a little extra aggressive to get this wicket. Bumrah needs to take additional risks. India lost 0–0 to the hosts in the ODI series after winning 5–0 against New Zealand in the T20 in which Bumrah’s flop show was important. Zaheer said that the batsmen will have to take some caution in facing Bumrah.

He said, ‘He knows that batsmen will be a bit defensive, so he will have to find a way to get the wicket done instead of expecting the batsmen to make a mistake. The batsmen are taking a very cautious attitude and they will ensure that Bumrah cannot take wickets.

Zaheer said, ‘It is a good sign that other batsmen are giving him so much respect, so now it is the responsibility of Bumrah to provoke him to play. He has to tell himself, ‘My job is not to stop runs, my job is to knock wickets and in the process if runs are also scored on my balls, then let me be. I am the main bowler so I have to dominate.’ The two-match Test series between India and New Zealand will begin in Wellington from 21 February.
