The team will be selected on Thursday for the upcoming series against Bangladesh. When the Indian selection committee will meet for team selection in Mumbai, then the issue of captain Virat Kohli’s assignment will be the subject of discussion. On the other hand, Sanju Samson can be included as a cover for Rishabh Pant. India has played 56 matches in all formats since October 2018, out of which Kohli has played in 48. However, the selection committee will leave the decision on Kohli whether he wants a break or to continue.

There is a possibility of discussion about Mumbai’s all-rounder Shivam Dubey, who can be selected in place of the all-rounder in place of injured Hardik Pandya. Apart from the three-match T20 series (two other matches in Rajkot and Nagpur) starting in Delhi from November 3, Bangladesh will play two Tests under the World Championship. Test matches will be played in Indore and Kolkata.

Samson recently scored a double century for Kerala in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, after his Pant is expected to be selected as the second option. A BCCI official, on the condition of anonymity, said, “If both Rishabh and Sanju are in the team, then there will be no problem in it. These two have also played together in IPL. Rishabh has got limited success in the short format, but looking at the future, we need to feed him.

He said, ‘At the same time Sanju has the ability to change the attitude of the match. Keeping the T20 World Cup in mind, the team management also needs to look at other options, because everyone knows that now is the time to look ahead of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. If Kohli is not in the team then Samson is being seen as a ‘back-up’ batsman, but it will be interesting to see if Manish Pandey can retain his place in the team.

Shivam Dubey of Mumbai has defeated Vijay Shankar in the second option of the all-rounder in the shorter format. The source said, ‘Everyone agrees that Shivam’s bowling is not yet of international standard and he is not even close to Hardik’s variety. But he is a left-handed player which is a positive thing and he can hit big sixes.

Wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are not expected to be selected, as Rahul Chahar and Washington Sundar are sure to get another chance. Lokesh Rahul is likely to retain his place in the team after a good performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan is in poor form, but the selectors may continue him in another series. Mayank Agarwal can be a substitute for reserve opener if he is dropped. Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini, and Khalil Ahmed are expected to be the three main fast bowlers.
