Impact of climate change on animals, shrinking size

Read Time:1 Minute, 17 Second

Johannesburg, Patrera The body size of the animals is constantly getting smaller due to climate change. This claim was made by the researchers on the basis of evidence gathered from 1976 to 1999 for a period of 23 years.

Researchers at the University of Cape Town (UCT) studied the size of a bird named Mountain Waget found near the palmette river in Westville, South Africa. Climate change has had a profound effect on the Earth and its ecosystem and in the last 100 years the global temperature has increased by nearly one degree Celsius. Fossil records show that both sea and land-based animals have been small in the past years due to climate change.

UCT professor Race Altwege said that on the basis of evidence, it is found that climate change is shrinking the size of the body, but there is no solid evidence in favor of it yet. He said that many other factors also affect the shape of the body. Therefore, in our study of 23 years, we are not expecting a clear impact of temperature. He explained that the shape of the body of an animal is an important indicator of its ability to preserve itself in its reproductive capacity, lifespan and drought and lack of food.
