US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said that he hopes the US and the Taliban can resume talks in the future. Pompeo said in an interview with Fox News that US-Taliban peace talks have been stalled for some time after an American soldier was killed in Afghanistan on Thursday.
According to news agency Xinhua, Pompeo referred to the talks, saying, “I hope we will start them back.” Adding the Taliban, he said that they are ready to demonstrate that they are ready to do the things that we asked them to do during those talks.
US President Donald Trump was asked to cancel the peace talks on Saturday, citing a fatal attack on US troops. Trump said in a tweet that a secret meeting with Taliban leaders and scheduled meetings with the scheduled Afghan president have been canceled after the attack.
