In this demonstration, for 79 days, the public has been stuck on the streets demanding to vote and choosing their leader. The protesting leaders were locked up in jail and the movement was crushed. China is still criticized in this international community for this.

In 1997, when the British had handed Hong Kong to China, some conditions were kept regarding the independence of the city. Like Hong Kong will have its own separate elections, its currency, regulations related to migrants and its judicial system. But in the past 20 years, the Chinese-backed Assembly of Hong Kong has not only tried to eliminate its independence but has also enjoyed success to a great extent.

Luck is not democracy

Hong Kong has been given autonomy and has the right to make elections, but people do not have a complete democracy here. The citizens here can vote for 50 percent of the sitting members in the assembly. But the rest of the members decide the business sector of this region, who obviously have a special business relationship with Beijing. There are 1200 members in the election committee and mostly lean towards Beijing’s policies. In this case, Hong Kong’s chief executive becomes the same, which is supported by Beijing.
