Los Angeles: 34 people are reported missing after a fierce fire broke out in a ferry off the southern California coast early Monday. Many of them are feared dead. The Coast Guard gave this information.

Capt. Brian McGrath of the Ventura County Fire Department confirmed The Daily Beast a few deaths. But said that he cannot reveal its exact number right now.

Lieutenant Commander Matthew Kroll told the Associated Press that five people were rescued and the Coast Guard is searching for another missing person.

Some of them may have jumped from the boat to escape the fire. Coast Guard officer Mark Barney said 33 people were feared dead, though. Two crew members have been seriously injured.

Coast Guard Capt. Monica Rochester told reporters that at around 3:15 am, five members of the crew awoke and jumped into the water when flames erupted.

A spokesman for Ventura County Bill Nash told CNN that many people were feared killed in the incident.
