Covid Vaccine: Central Government’s Big Decision
The central government has decided not to import the Corona vaccine on its own and leave it to the states and companies. Two Central Government officials gave this information on Monday. This decision could slow down the pace of vaccine imports amid the second wave of epidemics. Both officials say that instead of importing the vaccine itself, the Modi government will help domestic vaccine manufacturers by giving them purchase guarantees. The Modi government has also paid the advance to Indian manufacturers this month.
In fact, this month when the cases of corona infection started growing again, the Modi government had requested Pfizer, Maderna, and Johnson & Johnson to ask for permission to sell the vaccine in India. But sources say that the central government is now leaving it to states and companies to sign purchase agreements with foreign vaccine manufacturers.
Companies reduce vaccine prices
The government has asked the Serum Institute of India (SII) and Bharat Biotech, the two companies that make Corona vaccine in the country, to reduce the price of their vaccine. On Monday, all issues were discussed in a long meeting held under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba on the price of the vaccine. In this, the government asked the companies to take steps to cut its price in view of the current situation of the corona epidemic. This was the second meeting convened by the central government over the price of the vaccine within the last four days.
By the way, the central government is also sensitive to the additional burden on the states due to the purchase of the vaccine and when the time comes, the option to help the states is also open. It is believed that soon both companies will send proposals to the government for new prices of their vaccines.
The CoviShield manufacturer CII has fixed the price of its vaccine in India at Rs 150 per dose for the central government, Rs 400 for the states, and Rs 600 for the open market. At the same time, Bharat Biotech said on Saturday that the price of its vaccine will be Rs 600 for the states and Rs 1,200 per dose for the private sector.
