The second wave of Corona in the country continues to wreak havoc. On May 6, a record 4.12 lakh new cases were reported. The condition of hospitals is going worse. Meanwhile, a private hospital in Delhi is witnessing a spurt in fungal infections from Covid. This infection is called mucoramycosis.
Mucoramycosis is an infection that has increased due to Covid. Black fungus or mucomycosis has long been known to cause disease and death in patients with transplanted, ICU, and weakened immune systems.
Senior ENT surgeon Dr Manish Munjal at Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, says that in the last two, there have been six cases of mucoramycosis.
“We are once again seeing a spurt in dangerous fungal infections triggered by Covid. Last year, there were many deaths due to this infection and many patients lost their eyesight and had to remove the nose and jaw bone. ”

Dr. Ajay Swaroop, chairman of the ENT department of the hospital, says that steroids used in the treatment of Covid and diabetes in some patients may be the cause of the rise of this fungal infection.
Dr. Swaroop said, “These infections are commonly seen in patients who have recovered from Covid, but have comorbidities such as diabetes, kidney or heart failure and cancer.”
Dr. Munjal said that the risk of getting this infection is more in Covid patients with weak immune system. “Biopsy should be done immediately after seeing the initial symptoms such as nasal blockage, swelling in the eyes and black crust in the nose and antifungal therapy should be started as soon as possible,” he said.
