The US decision comes a day after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus an epidemic. Air India said on Wednesday night that it was temporarily closing flights to Rome, Milan and Seoul. An airline official said that services to Rome (Italy) will be closed from March 15 to 25. At the same time, flights to Milan (Italy) and the capital of South Korea will be suspended from 14 to 28 March. The company has taken this step after all tourist visas were suspended by the government till April 15.
The coronavirus was confirmed during an investigation on Wednesday in a 46-year-old man from Delhi. The person traveled to three countries including Italy. According to the Delhi government’s health department, the number of people infected with the coronavirus in Delhi has increased to five with this case. The department said that there are nine people in the person’s family and no member has been diagnosed with infection except his mother. The infected person is a resident of Janakpuri in West Delhi and has been admitted to RML Hospital. The government said that fifty houses in the neighborhood have been monitored.
The number of coronavirus cases in India increased to 67. However, India has banned the entry of international cruise, crew or passengers with travel history of Coronavirus affected countries till 31 March. At a time when the infection has continued to spread its foot in the country, the State Governments and Union Territories have taken several steps to stop the spread of the infection.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir administration ordered the closure of primary schools and Anganwadi centers in five districts of Jammu and closed cinema halls across the region as a precautionary measure till 31 March. The Karnataka government issued a temporary regulation asking all government and private hospitals to build ‘flu corners’ where suspected cases of coronavirus would be screened.
According to the regulation, no person or institution shall use print or electronic media to spread misinformation on the coronavirus without the prior permission of the Department of Health and Family Welfare. If a person is found involved in any such activity, he will be punished. The Karnataka government launched a campaign called ‘Namaste Over Handshake’. It encourages people to greet in the traditional Indian style to prevent the spread of the virus. As the number of infected cases continues to rise, more than 119,400 confirmed cases have been reported globally, of which more than 4,300 people have died so far.
In a statement in the Rajya Sabha, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that the situation in Italy and Iran is “a cause of great concern” and the government is making all efforts to bring back the Indians after proper investigation and screening. He said that a medical team will leave for Italy tomorrow for a screening of Indians.
Jaishankar said that the disease has spread to almost 90 countries. He said that if the government starts the process of bringing back Indians from all over the world, then it will only create panic.
Officials said that an Air India flight carrying 83 people arrived here from Italy on Wednesday, of which nine are of Indian origin. All these have been kept separately in the army unit located in Manesar, Delhi.
So far India has evacuated 948 passengers from Coronavirus affected countries. Of these, 900 are Indian nationals, while 48 are from various countries including Maldives, Myanmar, Bangladesh, China, USA, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Nepal, South Africa and Peru. The ministry said that a total of 10,57,506 passengers have been screened at the airport so far.
