In fact, along with the corona crisis, cases of mucoramycosis (black fungus) have also increased rapidly in NCR including the capital Delhi. According to doctors, it is difficult to avoid this disease when treatment is delayed. So far, about 350 patients have been admitted in NCR hospitals including Delhi. This has made the situation of black fungus worrisome. Doctors say that due to such large number of patients admitted, there has also been a shortage of medicines. Hence, it has become challenging to deal with mucoramycosis. Many patients have also died recently from this disease.
However, patients of this disease also met in the first wave of Corona. But then their number was less. Therefore, there was no shortage of medicines. Most of the patients suffering from diabetes (diabetes) are getting the disease as before. Most of them are patients who have been admitted to ICU or given more steroid when corona is infected. This has reduced their immunity. Even today, this disease is happening only to patients whose diabetes or corona infection has reduced their immunity.
Symptoms of the disease include watery blood with nose, half head pain, swelling in nose and eyes, toothache, etc. Dr. Alok Thakkar, head of the Department of Nose, Ear, Throat (ENT) at AIIMS, says that the correct term for this disease is mucoramycosis. Black fungus is not the right word. He says that before this, there were 20-25 cases of mucoramycosis throughout the year. But currently more than 100 patients have come to AIIMS in a week.
Seeing 20-25 patients daily. Most of these patients have uncontrolled diabetes. Also, they have consumed more of steroid. They are all being treated here. At the same time, if the disease reaches the brain of three patients, preparations are also being made for their surgery. It takes at least one month to cure this disease. The disease starts from the nose and reaches the eye and then the brain. By the time the nose and eye reach, the patient has a good chance of recovering. But there is very less possibility of reaching the brain.
