China and Trump approve legislation supporting Hong Kong protesters

Washington, Jagran Special.  Despite Beijing’s objections, US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed legislation supporting the protesters in Hong Kong. After Trump’s signature, the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act , 2019 bill has become law. This law provides for restrictions on the violation of human rights. Congress has also passed another bill, in which Trump has also signed. It also banned the export of crowd control activities such as tear gas, pepper, rubber bullets and ston gul to Hong Kong Police.

What President Trump said after signing the bill

President Trump said, ‘I have signed this bill to honor President Xi Chinfing and the people of Hong Kong.’ He said that the law was being made with the hope that China would abandon its aerial stance and resolve its differences amicably with Hong Kong leaders and representatives.   

Prior to Trump’s signature on this bill, China had several times objected to it. China had summoned the US ambassador and demanded the repeal of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, 2019 bill passed by the Senate. He also warned that if the US did not do so, it would have to face serious consequences.

Beijing had consistently pressured the US to repeal the bill before Trump’s signature. The US gave a stern warning by Beijing. China said that the Chinese government considers it an interference in China’s internal affairs.

What will be the effect of this law

The bill empowers the Trump administration to assess whether it is appropriate to change the special status granted under US law due to political unrest in Hong Kong. On this transfusion, the US can impose economic restrictions on the country concerned.
