Ajaz Yunus Patel is a cricketer born in Mumbai, India, on October 21, 1988. He moved to New Zealand with his family at the age of eight and now represents the country in international cricket. Patel plays for Central Districts in domestic cricket. Although he originally started as a left-arm seam bowler, he transitioned to become a slow left-arm spin bowler.
Ajaz Patel was born to Indian parents, Yunus and Shahnaz Patel, and has two sisters, Tanzeel and Sana Patel. He completed his schooling at Mount Mary School in Goregaon West, India. Patel is married to Nilofer Patel, and they have one child together.
Ajaz Patel began his professional cricket career in December 2015 with a List A debut in the Ford Trophy. During the 2015–16 Plunket Shield season, he was the highest wicket-taker, finishing with 43 wickets. His impressive performances continued, and in April 2018, he was named Men’s Domestic Player of the Year at the New Zealand Cricket Awards.

In the 2017–18 Plunket Shield season, Patel again topped the wicket-taking charts, claiming 48 wickets in nine matches. His form earned him a place in New Zealand’s Test squad for their series against Pakistan in July 2018. Later that year, in October, he also made his debut for New Zealand in T20I cricket against Pakistan.
In August 2021, he was selected for New Zealand’s ODI squad for their tour of Pakistan. His career reached a historic milestone in December 2021 when, during New Zealand’s Test series in India, he became only the third bowler in history to take all ten wickets in a Test innings. He achieved this feat in the second Test, finishing with figures of 10 wickets for 119 runs in the first innings, joining Jim Laker and Anil Kumble in this rare achievement.
In November 2023, Ajaz Patel was included in New Zealand’s squad for their Test series against Bangladesh. He continued his strong form, taking 6 wickets in the first Test and improving his performance to claim 8 wickets in the second Test.
