After the crushing defeat of 203 runs in the first Test match played at the hands of India in Visakhapatnam, South African team captain Faf du Plessis said that the target of more than 350 runs in the second innings in India has never been easy. Plessis, however, praised his team despite the defeat. India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series with a resounding victory on the final day of the match on Sunday.

After the match, Plessis said, ‘We did well with the bat. India batted well with us. Mayank and Rohit played superb innings. It was not easy for us to achieve the target of more than 350 because it has never been easier to score so many runs in the second innings in India.

India had declared their innings at 502 for seven wickets while playing first. After this, the visiting team scored 431 runs in their first innings. India declared the second innings by scoring 323 runs for four wickets and gave the target of 395 runs to the guests. Playing in response, the visiting team was dismissed for 191 runs.

Indian opener Rohit Sharma, who scored a century in both innings, was adjudged ‘Man of the Match’. Plessis admitted that after playing well in the first innings, he felt that his team would hold on to the match but the innings of Rohit and Cheteshwar Pujara made the match stand in India’s favor.

Plessis said, ‘Till this morning I was thinking that we played well on a good wicket. We could come back in the match but Rohit and Pujara spoiled our work. After this, Shami bowled brilliantly today. We need four-five more wickets from our spinners. Now we have to move ahead from this time to get ready for the second test. The second Test match will be played from October 10 in Pune.
