Read Time:2 Minute, 13 Second

Star opening batsman Abhishek Sharma on Thursday (December 5) equaled the record of the fastest T20 century by an Indian batsman. The 24-year-old Amritsar-born cricketer scored a century in just 28 balls for Punjab during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match played against Meghalaya at Niranjan Shah Stadium Ground C in Rajkot. By crossing the 100-run mark in just 28 balls, Abhishek equaled Gujarat batsman Urvil Patel’s record.

During the Gujarat-Tripura match played in Indore on November 27, 2024, the 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Gujarat had also scored a century in just 28 balls.

The overall record of scoring the fastest T20 century is in the name of Estonia batter Sahil Chauhan. Sahil crossed the 100-run mark in just 27 balls for Estonia against Cyprus during the match played in Episkopi earlier this year.

Fastest centuries in T20s

  • Sahil Chauhan (Estonia) – 27 balls vs Cyprus in 2024
  • Urvil Patel (Gujarat) – 28 balls vs Tripura in 2024
  • Abhishek Sharma (Punjab) – 28 balls vs Meghalaya in 2024
  • Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) – 30 balls vs Pune Warriors India in 2013
  • Rishabh Pant (Delhi) – 32 balls vs Himachal Pradesh in 2018

Abhishek, who is leading Punjab in the ongoing premier domestic T20 tournament, faced a total of 29 deliveries during his stay at the crease on Thursday and hammered 8 fours and 11 sixes to remain unbeaten on 106 runs.

Thanks to his super show with the bat, Punjab managed to chase down the target of 143 runs in just 9.3 overs for the loss of three wickets and went on to win the match by seven wickets.

Apart from his batting, Abhishek impressed with his bowling as well on Thursday and got rid of two Meghalaya batters for just 24 runs in his quota of four overs.

The win over Meghalaya was Punjab’s fourth triumph in six matches played so far in the ongoing 2024 edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and with a total of 16 points, the 2023 winners sit at the No. 4 position in the Group A points table.

Abhishek was on fire for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League and played a big role in the team’s run to the final of the 10-team tournament. He formed a solid opening partnership with Travis Head and finished the 17th edition of the cash-rich league with the most sixes. He was retained by the Hyderabad-based franchise for 14 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
