On February 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated vast areas of Turkey and Syria killed thousands of people.

The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 18 kilometres, was centred in southern Turkey, not far from the country's northern border with Syria, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

According to news agency AFP, the total death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria is currently over 3,800.

13 significant aftershocks with a magnitude of at least 5 struck the area in the first 11 hours following the original quake.

The earthquake was a strike-slip quake, which means that instead of moving up and down, two tectonic plates crossed one another horizontally.

The earthquake occurred on the East Anatolian fault zone, which is a seismically active area that has previously produced severe earthquakes.
