New Delhi The University Grants Commission (UGC) has justified its decision to conduct the final year / semester examination at the end of September. It told the Supreme Court that this has been done to save the academic future of students across the country. The UGC has filed a 50-page affidavit in the court on petitions challenging the July 6 notification to conduct final year examinations.

This was done to save the academic future of the students

It added that in June this year, in view of the state of the Kovid-19 pandemic, it requested the expert committee to reconsider the April 29 guidelines. In the April guidelines, universities and educational institutions were asked to conduct final year examinations in July 2020.

According to the UGC, the expert committee did the same and in its report recommended conducting semester and final year examinations by offline, online or mixed process at the end of September 2020. According to the affidavit, the report of the expert committee was discussed and approved by the UGC in its July 6 meeting. Shortly thereafter, changed guidelines regarding final year exams were issued keeping in mind the Kovid-19 epidemic.

It may be noted that the next hearing in the final year / semester examinations of universities in the Supreme Court is on 31 July 2020. During the last hearing, the court issued a notice to the UGC for filing replies on the petitions filed against the final year examinations.

Leaders and parents including students are demanding to cancel the exam

There has been opposition since the UGC guidelines came out for final year exams. Students have been opposing the final year exams on social media. Apart from this, many leaders and guardians are also opposing the decision of the UGC. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have written to the Center demanding cancellation of the exam. Also, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has also opposed the exam. At the same time, Shiv Sena’s youth wing has filed a petition in the apex court challenging the decision to conduct the examination by September.
