Did You Know, The Himalayan Glaciers complete the needs of 20 million people?
During the drought, the glaciers become the largest source of water supply in some of the major river basins of Asia. With this water, the needs of 22.10 crore people are getting fulfilled
London, Agency. During the drought, the glaciers become the largest source of water supply in some of the major river basins of Asia. The water coming from here meets the basic needs of approximately 22.10 million people. This has been revealed in a study. This study counts socially and economically for those areas which are susceptible to drought. Due to climate change, most of the area’s glaciers are melting.
Hamish Pritchard, the glaciologists of British British Antarctic Survey (BAS), said that melt ice water becomes necessary for people living in low-lying areas when there is no rain or excessive deficiency of water. One such study has been published in the journal Nature. According to the scientists, the glaciers leave 36 cubic kilometers of water in the summer season, which is equal to the water of 1 million 4 million Olympic swimming pools. So much water is enough to meet the needs of 20.21 million people.
In the Asia region, the Himalayan regions (Himalaya) are known as the third pole. There are 95 thousand glaciers present and approximately 80 million people are partly dependent on the water released from them. After snowfall every year, 1.6 times the water of the glaciers is melted. Researchers analyzed estimates of glacier contribution with the amount of rainfall in the normal days and years of drought. For this, he studied the amount of water released from the glacier and the major river basins of the area using the data sets of the climate and hydraulic modeling.
