60 people killed in protests in Iraq

Anti-government protests have been going on in Iraq’s capital Baghdad for the past four days.

So far, at least 60 people are reported to have been killed in these protests, with around 200 people being reported injured.

This death toll doubled on Friday. Two policemen who died are also included.

The protesters say that they are angry because of rising unemployment, poor public services and increasing corruption in the country.

A large number of youth are involved in these protests. He says that the Prime Minister is making false promises to him.

Army says some unidentified gunmen shot four people in Baghdad, including two police officers.

Prime Minister appealed for peace

At the same time, Iraq’s Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi has defended his administration and said that he is doing everything possible to help the poor families. He said that the magic wand cannot be solved by any problem. He appealed to the people to maintain peace.

Despite this appeal of the Prime Minister, these anti-demonstrations are becoming more fierce in Iraq every day.

Curfew has been imposed for an indefinite time in many other cities including Baghdad, along with the internet has been blocked.

On Friday, security forces also opened fire on protesters trying to reach Tehir Chowk in Baghdad.

Meanwhile, a senior Iraqi Shia leader, Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani, expressed grief over these protests.

His spokesman Ahmed Al Sefi said that the government has failed to meet the demands of the people, “The administration should understand that change is a very important thing. If the public wants change, then the government has to listen to it.

The United Nations and the United States have also expressed their concern over the worsening situation in Iraq. They have appealed to the government to control it.

Along with this, the human rights group Amnesty International has also appealed to the security forces to deal peacefully with the protesters.
